Support us

At the University of Victoria, we see education, knowledge creation and creative activity as crucial, not only to social and economic progress and competitiveness, but to constructive global citizenship and civic engagement.

Mahatma Gandhi:

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

Many of the changes in our society have placed natural and social systems under stress. More and more, the protection of the environment, health and social well-being demand our attention and our university is developing new ways to address and solve these issues across all the disciplines.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and its seven disciplines of Anthropology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology continue to evolve the way education is taught and research is undertaken. Each discipline helps us to better understand the world in which we live.

We are changing, even as the world is changing. We encourage you to make the transformation with us.

Help us to keep Social Sciences at the forefront of education changing lives, changing communities and changing the world.

Be a friend

The University of Victoria runs an Annual Donation Campaign with the assistance of student volunteers. Our students participate in a phone campaign calling donors in person to ask for support. Talking on the phone brings us closer to our community of supporters and saves on the costs associated with a direct mail campaign.

It's also a wonderful opportunity for donors and alumni to have one-on-one conversations with current students. Many of the student callers are from the Faculty of Social Sciences and are glad to talk about new things happening here on campus.

We encourage you to give as generously as you can when they call. Of course, you don't have to wait for a phone call – your donation is gratefully accepted at anytime.

Be innovative

Unrestricted annual gifts can fuel innovation and provide seed funds for faculty and students to pursue new ideas. Because innovations, by their very nature cannot be anticipated, we depend on unrestricted gifts to enable us to act quickly in the ever-changing world of education and research.

An unrestricted gift provides the faculty with the freedom and flexibility to seize opportunities and meet unexpected needs for curriculum innovation, ground-breaking research and enhancements to the student experience.

These gifts have a powerful and immediate impact, providing funding for areas critical to the faculty's success.

  • Student opportunities that enhance academic learning include: o student activities and conferences such as the Model United Nations in New York City
  • international internships and study trips
  • Financial aid is essential to attract and enroll the best students—regardless of their financial need.

Endowed funds

An endowment is a permanent investment in the faculty, our students and researchers. The income from an endowment provides an ongoing source of funding that grows over time; as the invested principal increases, so does the annual payout. An endowed fund – most often for a student scholarship – can recognize the donor or someone the donor wishes to honour in perpetuity. *

Opportunity: Endowed Speaker Series in Economics

Annual funds

Annual funds are received every year and can be directed in a variety of ways such as unrestricted funds or to a specific library or department funds.

Opportunity: Unrestricted funds for innovation support new student endeavours, library acquisitions, and University 201.

Capital gifts

Gifts made for capital projects support construction and renovation costs associated with a particular building or part of a building such as a laboratory space.

Opportunity: New construction or renovations to student learning spaces and laboratories.

Planned giving

Through careful planning, a donor may be able to make a sizable contribution to the faculty through a bequest or living trust. Other options include designating UVic Social Sciences as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or other retirement plan; or by means of a life income gift: that can provide a donor with considerable tax savings right away, along with income for life.

Opportunity: Student scholarships and research, infrastructure, and capital renewal.

*Please note: Always consult with your financial or tax advisor to see how giving to the University of Victoria will affect your individual tax situation.

Canadian and international employers partner with UVic in our Co-op Education program. Our students make an ideal addition to the workplace because they're bright, highly motivated and well trained in a variety of disciplines.

Co-op students can take on short-term tasks, contribute to ongoing projects or lend relief to regular staff during peak periods. In the long term, co-op can provide a cost-effective way to evaluate potential future employees, without making a long-term hiring commitment.

Visit any of our seven social sciences sites for further information on co-op programs for employers.
